Driving Licence & Vehicle Import in Mozambique
Getting on the road legally involves three separate processes: your licence, your vehicle's importation and its local registration. We run all three in sequence.
Your licence first
Short visits are usually covered by an international driving permit, but residents are expected to hold a Mozambican licence or a formally recognised foreign one. Conversion normally requires the original licence, a certified translation, medical clearance and proof of residence.
Importing your own vehicle
Duties, age limits and right-hand-drive rules make importation worthwhile for some vehicles and clearly uneconomic for others. We price the landed cost against local purchase before you ship anything.
Registration and insurance
A vehicle only becomes legal once it is registered, plated, inspected and insured. Third-party cover is compulsory; expatriates typically add comprehensive cover with regional coverage for travel into South Africa or Eswatini.

Can I drive on my home licence?
For short stays, usually yes with an international driving permit. Once you are resident, you should convert. Driving on an unrecognised licence can void your insurance after an accident.
Is it cheaper to import or buy locally?
